Sewing with Friends

Getting together with friends to sew is one of my favorite things to do. On the July 4th weekend a group of us from the shop put the classroom to good use. We bring music, food and lots of projects to work on. Usually there is quite a bit of chocolate involved.

I am always amazed at things I learn quite by accident when I sew with others. I am working on a new sample from Kim Diehl's new book Simple Comforts. We've gone nuts over this book! Anyway, the quilt has four long bias vines that the instructions tell you to make with bias bars. We are all about taking short cuts here and Kristin showed me a gadget from Clover that makes fusible bias tape. I didn't try the fusible part, but used it to make my vines in about 5 min when I know the bias bars would have taken a lot longer and I would have had a few burned fingers.

I used a bit of fabric glue to put them in place and then used a buttonhole/blanket stitch to secure them. We all had this big discussion on what the stitch is called and if you can use either term and be correct.
I also used the gadget to make the straps for a passport tote for my daughter to take to Germany. Edith showed me a nifty technique for putting in a zipper which I've never used before. I hate sewing anything clothing related, but love piecing quilts. Weird, huh.
